What is web development?

Web development is the process of creating websites and apps for the Internet (or private networks called intranets). Web developers bring the design and functionality of a website to life by writing code that manages styling, layout, interactivity, and more. From the simplest, static websites to social media platforms and apps. From e-commerce websites to content management systems (such as WordPress), every tool we use on the Internet was created by web developers.

There are three different types (or hierarchies) of web development.
Front-end, back-end and database technology. Front-end development, also known as client-side scripting, involves all elements of her website that users experience first-hand. Layouts, fonts, colors, menus, contact forms, etc. are all supported on the front end.

Backend development or server-side scripting is all about what goes on behind the scenes. When you interact with the website in some way (for example, fill out a form and click Submit), the frontend communicates that action to the backend. The backend responds by sending relevant information to the frontend. For example, the code needed to display a message such as “Thank you for completing this form.”

The third layer contains database technology. The database contains all the files and content your website needs to function and stores them so that they can be easily retrieved, organized, edited and saved.

Front-end, back-end, and database technologies all work together to build and run a fully functional website or application. These three layers therefore form the basis of web development.
